Choosing to live outside societal norms, four women, whispered to be witches, have kept a prickly truce with their small town for decades. Unexpectedly, the relationship becomes fraught when the only witness to a long-ago tragedy shows up after almost a half century absence.
Tensions rise further when a pastor's wife, caught in a crisis of faith, finds her search for understanding leading her to those same women. When her seeking ignites other women to question their place within her husband's church, one of their members is driven to try to stop the rising changes with a desperate act.
