Season of Fear

International Thriller Writers Award-winner and bestselling author Brian Freeman has established himself as a master of psychological thrillers. In Season of Fear, Freeman returns to the sun-drenched beaches of Naples, Florida, and the idiosyncratic world of Detective Cab Bolton.

Attractive and popular politician Diane Fairmont is running for the Florida governorship, but a chill is cast over the campaign when she receives an anonymous note announcing the return of the assassin who killed her husband ten years earlier. Because of complicated ties between Fairmont and his mother, movie actress Tarla Bolton, Detective Bolton is assigned to the case.

As Bolton struggles to penetrate the veil of secrecy surrounding the Fairmont campaign, he begins to realize that the death threat is not the only danger faced by the campaign staff. A desperate race against the clock ensues as Bolton tries to unlock the secrets of a poisonous conspiracy before nature provides the perfect cover for a long-dormant killer to strike again.

In the prologue of this fast-paced first in a new crime series from Edgar-finalist Freeman (The Cold Nowhere), an assassin fatally shoots Birch Fairmont, a congressional candidate from the newly formed Common Way Party, and two others at a political fund-raiser in Lake Wales, Fla. Ten years later, Birch’s widow, Diane Fairmont, is running for governor of Florida as a member of the same third party. When evidence surfaces that Diane might be a killer’s target, Candice Dean, the executive director of a foundation affiliated with the Common Way Party, hires detective Cab Bolton to look into the earlier unsolved murders, but she balks when his investigation doubles back on Diane’s relationship with Birch and her drug-addict son. Meanwhile, campaign staffer Peach Piper, whose boyfriend and coworker was found dead two weeks earlier, is also worried about an assassination attempt, and starts asking uncomfortable questions. Right-wing extremists, drug dealers, and political opponents are all credible potential culprits. Only some overblown dialogue mars a taut thriller that’s at once a whodunit and a who-will-do-it. FEBRUARY 2016 - AudioFile

There’s a reason Joe Barrett succeeds as narrator in so many audiobooks. He has a particularly dynamic and intriguing style. Freeman’s second Cab Bolton mystery is a soaring, complex thriller of political corruption and human failing. Set in Florida, it involves Cab with a campaign for governor and old crimes. Barrett voices just enough to give his characters definition. Where he excels is in imbuing all of them with feeling, passion, and temperament in sync with the storyline. It doesn’t matter that his male and female voices differ little in pitch and intensity; the essential differences exist in timbre, intonation, and pacing. His delivery is complex, but Barrett never loses the thread of the story. M.C. 2016 Audies Finalist © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine
