Description: This nursing drug handbook gives detailed information about 5,000 drugs. It is designed to be easy to use, contains an IV drug compatibility chart, and lists drugs alphabetically and by disorders that they treat. It has an appendix for herbal medications, calculating dosages, lab values, antidotes, and more. The accompanying website is through Evolve, but is geared more toward student nurses than practicing.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate nurses on medications so they can safely administer them and answer patient questions. The book meets those objectives.
Audience: The authors indicate the book is for nurses, nursing students, and other health providers, but anyone who administers or prescribes could use it as a reference guide, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and even physicians who want to look up a drug quickly and not on their phone app. The authors include one PharmD and one advanced nurse. The reviewers are all Pharm Ds and the consultants are mostly nurses. They are all credible.
Features: The title of the book is brief and states clearly that it is a nursing drug handbook to be used for reference. It presents black box alerts, complete drug data, and nursing considerations. It discusses drug uses, precautions, interactions, side effects, dosages, and pharmacodynamics for all 5,000 drugs. The appendix includes lab values, herbal medications, useful abbreviations, and commonly abused drugs. The first few hundred pages review medications used for specific disorders, while the body of the book lists drugs alphabetically.
Assessment: This book is better than the Mosby's 2021 Nursing Drug Reference, 34th edition, Skidmore-Roth (Elsevier, 2021) for practicing nurses because it has more to offer: herbals, drug calculations, information by diagnosis, and an IV compatibility chart. However, it does not have a thorough nursing considerations section on each drug, while Mosby goes into detail about what nurses need to consider. This book is published every year, but I think every three years would be plenty. Once a new drug comes out on the market, the average prescriber will wait one to two years just to observe the safety profile.
