CHAPTER 1

In the kitchen, Sambi was playing; on the window sill lay Mitzi the cat, and mother was cooking. She was humming. From time to time she gave Sambi a taste. Sambi liked to taste the cream. He liked it most when mother gave it to him from the big, wooden spoon and asked him to lick it clean.

Suddenly mother said, "Oh no!"

"What happened?" asked Sambi.

"The milk is finished, there is only a little sugar and one egg left, and I am in the middle of cooking and cannot go to the store."

"I can go to the store for you!" Sambi said happily.

"You?" Mother said, "All by yourself?"

"I am a big boy now!"

"Sure you are! Well, Sambi, here is what I need: some sugar, a quart of milk, six eggs, a loaf of bread, two yogurts, and a pack of chewing gum."

"I want a chewing gum too!" cried Sambi.

"The gum is for you, silly" said mother. "Here, let me write it all down."

"No, mom, you don't have to, I can remember."

"Just in case," Mother said, smiling.

Mother gave Sambi the shopping list, a kiss, and some money ... "You be careful now," said mother, "Talk to no one, and when you cross the street ..."

"I know," said Sambi, "Look left and right and cross only when the road is clear."

"Meow," said Mitzi.

"Oh , no, Mitzi, you can't come with me, I'm going to the store all by myself!"

"Meow!" Mitzi said, following him.

"Only to the door," said Sambi.

Sambi went down the stairs. He was really proud. For the first time, he was going to the store all by himself.

The street looked very clear. The birds were whispering, "Whitss! Whitss! Whitss!"

"Hello to you birds! Guess where I'm going? I'm going shopping!" said Sambi.

"Whitss! Whitss! Whitss!" said the birds.

"Mitzi is at home," Sambi answered." I am going shopping all by myself!"

"Whitss! Whitss! Whitss!" said the birds.

"Yes," said Sambi "It is fun!" As he walked down the street, thinking about what he had to buy. First of all the chewing gum, that's for sure. Then eggs, then the milk, also for the cake and also for Mitzi. Mitzi always liked milk.
