Overview

The Fuzztones sound as if they've stepped out of a Screamin' Jay Hawkins show to go and visit the Addams Family. The opening, "My Brother the Man," is part garage rock but more of a cheesy psychedelic-tinged pop ditty. Lead singer and mastermind Rudi Protrudi is quite intense on the song, while the occasional "hey" is throw in for good measure. "Get Naked" comes off as sullen in parts although the verses and melody bring to mind Tommy James & the Shondells with its fuzzed-out guitars and cheesy Hammond organ. The Fuzztones nail "Face of Time" thanks to the guitar work that resembles a glut of the garage bands pouring out of Detroit, including the Sights and the Dirtbombs. The tension and overall groove exemplify what the Fuzztones have going for them, especially later on during the foot-stomping "Group Grope." But too often the album is mired in faux-ghoulish spoken parts that would better left in a Vincent Price horror film. Fortunately, Protrudi excels on "Be Forewarned" in a style that mixes Jarvis Cocker circa Different Class and Eric Burdon howling on "House of the Rising Sun." The boogie quotient comes along during "Johnson in a Headlock," with some fine work from Bat Lord on guitar and a catchy chorus the Mooney Suzuki has yet to discover. The organ-driven "Black Lightning Light" is tight with some guitar chutzpah underneath. One true clunker is the Middle Eastern or Indian hues coloring a bland "Idol Chatter." The ensuing "Hallucination Generation" is a poor attempt at a poor song the Doors might have considered at one time. ~ Jason MacNeil
