Sally to the Rescue

Chapter One
Sally, a harbor seal, knew it would take long hours of practice and hard work to be a good swimmer like her mom. Swimming did not come easily to Sally. Everyone knows that harbor seals are very fast in the water. Other harbor seals Sally's age were swimming with their friends; they had already learned to swim as fast as their parents.
One day Sally sadly asked her mom, "Why can't I swim as fast as my friends?"
Her mom answered, "One day when you become a fast swimmer, I will let you swim with all your friends in Oakum Bay."
Sally continued practicing her swimming day after day. One beautiful sunny day when she was swimming beside her mom, Emma, Dolly the Dolphin jumped out of the water and into the air.
Dolly said, "Hi, Sally. Where are you and your mom going?"
Sally answered, "We are on our way to Pond Island."
"May I join you?" asked Dolly.
"Oh yes," replied Sally's mom happily, knowing that Dolly had been following Sally's progress.
Dolly said to Sally, "You are becoming quite a strong swimmer." Swimming beside Emma, Dolly quietly asked her if she could teach Sally to play leapfrog in and out of the water. "This is a way for Sally to swim faster. I teach many young dolphins to swim better," Dolly explained.
Sally's mom replied, "Oh yes, that is very kind of you Dolly. I will continue on to Pond Island and wait for you there while you and Sally play."
Sally watched her mom swim at a steady pace to Pond Island. Then Dolly and Sally went off to play. The sun danced on their backs as they jumped high into the air.
"Look! I am able to keep up with you! I am having a lot of fun. See how high I can jump. Did your mom teach you to jump and swim, Dolly?" asked Sally.
"Yes, she did," answered Dolly, "and I must say that my mom and I had as much fun as we are having now. At times you forget you are learning because you are not thinking about what you are doing. You are just having fun doing it."
Sally excitedly said, "This feels great. Thank you, Dolly!" Sally had been swimming hard and fast. She needed to rest. Finally she and Dolly reached the shallow waters of Pond Island.
Sally slid onto a toasty, warm rock. Turning her head, Sally caught a familiar scent—her mother. Emma had reached Pond Island before Sally and Dolly and had decided to take a nap in the sun on the rocks as she waited for them.
Finally reaching the island, Dolly said to Emma, "Thank you, Emma. Sally did really well."
