Description: This book covers maternity, labor, and birth through postpartum through the lens of the family. It then goes into the newborn's normal care, growth, and development through adolescence with pediatric concerns and deviations from normal. Real-life case studies start every chapter in a structure that is very engaging, motivating, and gives readers the "why" they should want to read this. The key terms, concepts, and learning outcomes are also clear and guide students' reading. The conceptual cornerstones bring in the bigger picture versus criteria to memorize as do the safety stats. The e-learning platform was also very helpful with NCLEX-type quiz questions, as well as scenarios and progress reports. The first edition was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to offer a variety of learning experiences that combine the art of nursing with science from preconception to adolescence. It encompasses or highlights safety and critical thinking and has several features that go along with the book - online quizzes with personalized analysis of comprehension, participation, and test taking skills. There are additional resources that can be accessed such as interactive clinical scenarios, animation, post-conference questions, care plans, and references to name a few. The objectives are worthy with the central themes of safety and conceptual themes. There is an ebook that I did not access, but I would think it useful as the text is large and cumbersome if one needs to study anywhere but home. The objectives have been met. There is sufficient information, attractive and informative graphics, and an online presence both for the book and quizzes.
Audience: The book is written for LPN/LVN students learning about maternity and pediatrics. The one aspect I found confusing is that it is not until page xiv that I became sure this was for LPNs (as opposed to RNs) and that influenced my perception of the book, which then had to be revised. Looking at this book through the lens of an LPN, there are some chapters that have sufficient depth (maternity) and others that seem quite detailed (pediatric deviations - specifically neurological deviations). One author is currently clinically active as an APRN and works with LPNs. The other author is an APRN without mention if currently practicing, but a long experience of teaching. There are also approximately 22 advisory board members who range from clinicians to educators to administrative positions. No other publications are listed.
Features: The title covers maternity and pediatric nursing care with an emphasis on safety. The writing is quite clear and the material is organized chronologically from preconception to birth and then from the newborn through adolescence. I especially liked the organization of key terms, concepts, learning outcomes, and conceptual cornerstones with safety alerts throughout. There are also color-coded health promotion boxes to highlight that aspect and the tables and graphics are quite clear, concise, and very informative. The colors used are easy to visualize and add a depth to the learning. I think the text couldn't possibly include all these health promotion aspects and therefore the boxes are acceptable.
Assessment: This book is useful because of its organization of the features I've listed as well as the myriad of online options that really enhance students' learning. This edition justifies itself by incorporating what were previously bonus chapters only offered online so now it is more streamlined. Most other textbooks are just "Maternity and Pediatric Nursing" or "Maternal Child Nursing," but there are none I have seen that have "safety" included in the title.
