Description: This book addresses the rural healthcare landscape of the U.K. It covers topics including physician supply, difficulty with rural recruitment, the importance of rural healthcare teams, rural health challenges, and rural transportation issues. The first edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to highlight the challenges and issues that rural healthcare in the U.K. is facing. This book highlights the lack of resources in many rural communities and draws attention to rural health equity. These are worthy objectives, and the book provides helpful context for these challenges.
Audience: This book is written to anyone on the health care team who has an interest in serving rural communities through primary care: students, residents, doctors, nurses, advanced practice providers and other clinicians. The book meets the needs of its audiences by methodically discussing multiple aspects of health care in rural locations. The authors come across as knowledgeable and credible.
Features: The book covers various aspects of rural health care. Physicians and other clinicians need to have broad-based training as resources are limited. Teams that include nurses, pharmacists, and other clinicians must work together to tackle maternity care, lack of pharmacy care, technology gaps, and transportation needs. The book does not leave any stone unturned. The chapters are short which allows for quick information dissemination. An area that could be expanded is discussion about the availability of other allied health clinicians, such as dentists and optometrists, in rural areas.
Assessment: The book does a good job of giving a basic overview of many different health care topics. Each chapter can be covered quickly. While many of the challenges facing the rural U.K. are similar to challenges in the rural U.S., there are major differences in those health care systems which can affect the book's applicability to a U.S. audience. The previous edition was 25 years old and in a generation's time much change occurs, so this new edition is justified.
