Editorial Reviews

DEC 02/JAN 03 - AudioFile

Rumpole retired? Yes. The "Old Bailey hack" and Hilda, better known as "She Who Must Be Obeyed," have moved to Florida for their golden years. However, Rumpole, isn’t happy "being an orange," so when a letter regarding a particularly difficult case arrives from a former colleague, Rumpole seizes the excuse to sneak away from "SWMBO" and back across the Atlantic. With his plonk (rotgut) wine, small cigars, and acerbic wit, Rumpole manages to disrupt everyone in Chambers. Blood stains, fanatic cults, and pornography only serve to add spice to an already well-seasoned Rumpole escapade. A fine reading by Robert Hardy makes this venture into British jurisprudence completely enjoyable. Hardy captures John Mortimer’s wonderfully abrasive barrister, providing the exact sardonic tone for a most entertaining romp. S.J.H. 2003 Audie Award Finalist © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
