Overview

Most of us fall into one of three categories: those still on a quest to please God, those who have given up trying because they realized they cannot accomplish what they're being told pleases God, and those who don't even bother trying in the first place because the task seems too daunting. How would each of those groups be affected if we found out those "tasks"—the things we think impress God—actually do the opposite? What if we found out we have the wrong approach? What if our set of ideals has been tainted? What if our perceived sense of righteousness is all wrong? Regardless of which group you find yourself in at this moment, would those realities not cause you to reevaluate everything? After all, this could radically change things, not only in our own lives, but also in our churches and ultimately the world.

In Rude Awakening, Mark Donnelly describes the soul-searching that took place after a near-drowning experience, during which he had a horrific realization that he had completely missed what God really expects. The book is written not as a list of suggestions regarding what the church supposedly needs but rather as a set of confessions about how badly the author missed the mark in his own life. It is not about criticism but rather about a renewal of passion and a regeneration of true, multi-directional love.

About the Author

Sometimes you may read a book written by a full-time minister and the author seems to imply that if you do this or that, everything in life will be okay. If you're like me, the thought occurs to you, Hmmm, that's easy for him/her to say, he/she has a cushy life surrounded by Christians and I'm stuck here in the real world. I dare say that you and I will be embarrassed when we stand before God and realize those ministers dealt with more "stuff" than we could imagine (I would venture to guess that sometimes those very same ministers wish they could trade places with us). With that being said, who am I? Simply put, I am YOU. In other words, I am a layperson trying to search out how to be a better Christian in a real-world that is not often Christian-friendly. I am a son, husband, father of three, small-business owner, coworker, patron, volunteer, advocate, and friend. With so many irons in the fire, I feel as if sometimes I meet myself coming home as I am leaving for the day. In short, I am an ordinary person who happened to have an extraordinary experience, and by the grace of God I lived to tell about it. I was given another chance to be and do all that God has called me to be and do, and I am determined not to squander it. I had to go back to the drawing board with respect to my Christian walk. Eventually, this book began to take shape. To date, this has been the most difficult thing I have done in my life, not because of the technical part of writing a book, but because of the humbling that has taken place. I thought I had been doing a pretty good job of being a Christian, but I could not have been more wrong. The ugliness inside me continues to be revealed and that is very tough on my spiritual ego. This book was written to myself, almost with a "Christianity for Dummies" approach, because I realized I needed it that way. Even if I am the only one this book helps, the time and money spent on it is well worth it, but my prayer is that it helps you as well.
