Chapter One

HISTORY OF ROULETTE

Roulette is the oldest of all the casino games being played today, and the modern roulette wheel has been the cynosure of casino gambling for more than 200 years.

In many European casinos, roulette accounts for more than half the legal gaming revenue. In the United States, roulette accounts for less than five percent of the total gaming revenues.

One of the earliest descriptions of the present form of roulette can be found in the French novel La Roulette ou le Jouer by Jacques Lab lee, was published in 1801. In 1843, when the twin brothers, François and Louis Blanc opened their casino in Homburg, Germany, they introduced the first single—zero roulette wheel. This was in a successful play to take business away from other Casinos.

Twenty years later, Francois Blanc purchased the failing casino in Monte Carlo and installed single—zero roulette wheels. It set the standards for the rest of Europe. Double zero wheels found their way to New Orleans. Then the U.S. wheels had twenty-eight numbered pockets plus three house pockets marked with a zero, a double zero, and an eagle. The house paid single-number odds at only 26 to 1, giving it a 12.9% advantage.

When single-number odds were paid at 35 to 1, the double-zero French wheel had a house advantage of only 5.26%. This was much better.

Today, the single zero French wheel has an advantage of only 2.70% without en prison for even money bets. With en prison, for even money bets, the house has an advantage of only 1.35%.

You may ask the question why I should write a book on roulette. I have read most of the books on roulette and I truly believe that they have all missed the key to the game of Roulette. After recording over 50,000 spins in live casinos, I've discovered that the key to roulette is the precursor to a number. I have discovered that certain numbers follow certain numbers. I will insert a caveat here; certain numbers follow certain numbers at a much better ratio than the 37 to 1 ratio probability would indicate, if one is playing with a good spinner. To define a good spinner you simply need to read the chapter on picking a spinner. If one follows the information in this book, one has a much better chance of winning when one plays the game of roulette. Roulette is based on precursors, and up to this time no author has suggested this scientific method of playing the game of roulette.

Eighty-five percent of the game of roulette is applied physics. You have the wheel, the ball, the spinner, and around fifteen percent chance. This is what this book is all about.

Chapter Two

BEFORE YOU BEGIN!

You enter a casino and your heart starts beating a little faster. The looks on peoples faces are of a mix from, I just wish I had stopped sooner or I just wish I had not brought my ATM card to the casino. Some of them have an elated look like, I just hit a small jackpot or I just hit a nice jackpot. Such is the aura of entering the casinos. The lights hit you. Then the short-skirted girls peddling drinks meet your eyes. You stop by a roulette wheel with the numbers displayed prominently on the number boards. As you examine the numbers, you determine if the spinner is hitting the correct numbers. You see three winning combinations on the board, and now you wish you had come a little earlier. You now want to play but the right thing to do is to watch the spinner to see if he or she is using the right method of spinning. Is she releasing the ball immediately as she picks it up, or is it done with one smooth flip of the wrist? It looks fairly good. Now, let's see if this spinner can hit a winning combination. You watch and she comes right next door to number 17. The ball had been on 28 and was supposed to hit 17. It fell one number short and landed on 32. Not bad, you watch for ten minutes more and she doesn't come any closer than six numbers from the correct target. You watch for ten minutes and still there is no direct hit on the favorite 12. You decide it is time to observe another table.

If you approach each gaming session with this type of caution stated above, you have what it takes to be a successful player.

One can get lucky and win right away occasionally, but to be a consistant winner, one needs to approach the game with caution. Remember the spinner is your opponate; they are not your friend. They work for the casino. They work for the place you are trying to take to the cleaners. Be careful! They may smile; they may be very friendly; they may hit your numbers a few times. They may say, "I am trying to hit the number you are on," but don't put a lot of stock in anything they do or say. You are there to beat them and your goal is to win so much the pit boss sends them packing.

This is how you start: once you find a table that seems to be right, sit down and give them your casino card and your money. Write down on your card the date, the time, and the amount you gave the dealer. Determine before you sit down the loss-limit you have set. Be sure to set one, and walk away once you have reached that limit.

If you can afford a 2,000 bank, you can win a lot of money. With a limit around that use a progression like the following: If the table has a $5 minimum bet five dollars for the first thirty spins, bet ten dollars for the next twenty spins. Bet fifteen dollars on the next ten spins, twenty dollars for the next ten spins. Bet thirty dollars for the next ten spins, and bet forty dollars for the next ten spins. Bet fifty for the next five spins, and then bet sixty for the next five spins.

This gives you 100 spins on your number.

You will spend: 5x30 = 150 10x20 = 200 15x10 = 150 20x10 = 200 30x10 = 300 40x10 = 400 50x5 = 250 60x5 = 300 $1950.00

If you hit during the one hundred spins, you will walk away a winner. Now, if you are playing the favorite dozen and wait for your special twelve, you will have far more spins to wait through than one hundred. You will hit if you checked out your spinner, and if you have moved on to another table if things started to look complicated. You can use the above one hundred spins paridigm on "0" or "00" as well. If you love the zeros, read the chapter on zeros before you experiment.

You can try the above paradigm on the 17/20 split. If you want to limit your losses, play the 17/20 split off the following numbers.

0, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 17, 20, 21, 24, 26, 28, 29, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 00. These twenty one numbers are the best numbers to hit the 17/20 split.

Chapter Three

DEEP POCKETS

If you really want to be a player, you should have a bank roll of at least 4,000. You can operate on less, but to be comfortable and have that lasting ability you should have around 4,000.

Not long ago I was playing in Metropolis, IL and started with $20 and five days later it had turned into $3,200. This is the exception, not the general result in the game of roulette.

After my win at Metropolis I treated myself to a very beautiful game table imported from Italy. I bought it at an antique store in Paducah, KY. called The Comfort Zone. The table splits apart and reveals a roulette wheel with a beautiful Roulette layout on the wood. It is a burl-wood design with an Italian Flair.

Part of the $3,200 I won that week was given to me by a player who I helped turned $10,000 into $22,000 one of those nights; he tipped me $600 for the help.

This is a great game and I really enjoyed putting my system to work that night.

Chapter Four

PICKING A SPINNER

Roulette is a game of physics. Part of that physics equation is the spinner. This is probably the most important part.

When you enter the roulette area be alert and look and listen. Is it a fairly quiet table? Are there any obnoxious players playing? Are there any very large people sitting near the wheel that look like they are taking up half the side of the table? I mention this because the other night, just a few weeks ago, I was playing at the River Queen in St. Louis, MO. and a very large man was seated at position one, but taking over half of the table. I tried to place a bet to his left and he didn't offer to move an inch. In fact I had to have the dealer place my bet because of his obstreperousness. It simply made playing at that table an un pleasurable experience. He didn't smile and seemed it indicate he owned the table. So watch for this kind of situation. Also watch for a busy table because you do not want to be one of two or three players.

Now, you are checking out the spinner. Does she spin in a professional manner? Does she seem to have control of the ball? Most importantly, is she picking up the ball and droping it in one smooth motion? The most important feature of the game is to have a spinner or in France a Tourneur, who picks up the ball and releases it right away with one smooth motion. The wheel should be going at a slow to medium speed. If the spinner gives the wheel a big push just before she spins, the wheel is going too fast.

Make sure she waits until the wheel is going in a slow to medium speed. A very fast wheel is not in your best interest.

Again, she should pick up the ball and release it in one quick, smooth release. By doing this the ball will end up close to where the precursors say it should.

Watch her or him spin until one of the correct numbers follows the number it should. If after thirty spins, none of the correct numbers hit, move on to a different table or simply do not play. This may be hard for you at first but you will learn to discipline yourself in this way. If he or she spins a back to back, pick up interest in the spinner. Usually a back to back spinner is a fairly good one.

When you do decide the spinner is ok and you are playing, be sure to remove your bet if the spinner spins the ball out of the wheel. The next spin after a (ball out) situation is usually a bad one. Let her or him calm down before you start betting. Quite often a ball out situation is caused by an inexperienced spinner.

I have learned that the spinner I am looking for is a small oriental lady who is at least half way through her shift. I mention this because in the beginning of a shift the pit boss will often tell a spinner to mix it up a little. This means to vary her spins and put some English on the ball and simply spin fast one time, slower the next, etc. This is what the pit boss means by mixing up the spins a little. After a few hours, she will settle back to her routine spin and you will see a constant rhythm. This smooth rhythm is the result of her spinning for years, and her settling into the last half of her shift. Another way to tell if she is mixing up her spin is, if she lands about 8 spaces to the right of the last stop and then she spins 8 or 10 spaces before her last stop.

Remember you are looking for a spinner that hits the numbers she is supposed to or at least very close. Her release is smooth and immediate. If the spinner holds the ball even for 2 or 3 seconds before she release the ball, she is a bad spinner.

Occasionally, a spinner will try to hold the ball until the wheel makes one rotation, and then try to release the ball at the previous number. This is very hard to do and invariably she will miss that number by 2 to 5 numbers and it will result in an inaccurate spin. Don't play if they hold the ball for one spin and then release it.

Some spinners have a habit of releasing the ball right after either the 0 or 00. Their peripheral vision catches the green and they spin right after the 0's or 00's. I've seen this a lot. I've seen it so much that I would stop playing if it is noticed. Often if you see 33 and 34 hit a lot, the spinner is releasing the ball right after the 0's or 00's.

If you observe the pit boss whispering into the spinner's ear, you should be thinking of exiting the game. This is especially true if you are ahead by $500 or more. It is better to take a small gain than risk losing it.

You should question the spinner after you feel comfortable with them. Ask them if they have been spinning for long. If the answer is 10 years or more, play with them but keep good track of your winnings. If your winnings start to go downhill exit the game.

It is kind of a paradox. You want an experienced spinner but you don't want an expert one who can aim the ball at will. Once in awhile you will find a spinner willing to help you hit your numbers. Play a short time with them, and maybe you will get lucky, but always remember who signs their paycheck. It does not hurt to put a chip on a number for them, especially if they have been consistently hitting your numbers. Don't get carried away with the tipping. I think a tip of 1% is plenty. If they really make you a lot, tip them more, but certainly limit yourself. If everybody tipped 1% of their winnings, the spinners would have a very good evening.

Learn the spinners. Take notice as to who the good spinners are in which casinos. Put their names on your card. If spinners switch out balls more often than once every two hours, exit the game. They obviously have noticed you're winning and are trying to counter your success.

I prefer a casino where the same ball is used for hours at a time. Some balls are very tiny; avoid these balls. Also avoid the balls that look like they are an inch in diameter. A medium ball is best that doesn't bounce around too much. If the ball seems to keep on bouncing or moving beyond normal, stop your play.

I'm taking a lot of time on this spinning chapter because I do believe it is the most important aspect of the game.

If you watch 40 spins and one of the favorite dozen doesn't hit move on to another table.

Keep your eye on spinners at other tables. Occasionally check the reader boards to see if any of the other spinners are hitting your numbers more than where you are playing.

Men spinners often put too much energy into their spins. Usually these are the newer men spinners, who have not been spinning too long. If you find you win more with women, make it a point to play with women spinners. Mark your card whether you are playing with male or female spinners.

Fine tune your play and you will find you are winning more consistently. It is your money! Protect it! Only get a little liberal when you are way ahead. You can afford a little fun after you are several thousands dollars ahead in an evening!

Chapter Five

MATHMATICAL SYSTEMS

How to make the various mathematically minded systems work for you.

The Martingales, the Grand Martingale, the reverse Martingale, the D' Alembert system A, the D' Alembert system B, the D' Alembert system C, the reverse D' Alembert, the Labouchere system:

Save your money.

Save your money and do not fall for these fallacious systems. There are much better ways to plan your winning strategy!

The limits on the table will eventually get you and you will be a big loser.

Certain systems work but read the rest of this book before you try them.

Chapter Six

HOW TO PLAY THE BASIC GAME OF ROULETTE

Sit down to the table and give your 100 dollars along with your casino card to the croupier. Using your player's card is the way you get comps. Comps are items like food and hotel that the casino will give you for your play.

Tell the croupier that you want dollars. He will give you 100 chips in whatever color is available. You may sit wherever you feel comfortable, but I like position one which is next to the wheel. Here you can see the action and have a better handle on the game. The second best seat is next to the dealer. At that seat you can reach all of the table.

These are the choices as to where you place your bets.

1. You can play straight up on a number. That means you place your chips directly on the number making sure it is not touching any of the lines. If there is already a bet on the number, place your bet directly on top of that other bet. You will be paid 35 to one if you hit.

2. You can split two numbers. For this bet you put your bet between two numbers. You will be paid if either number hits. You will be paid 17 to one.

3. You can place your bet on the intersecting lines between four numbers. This is called a corner bet and pays eight to one.

4. You can place your bet on one of the three groups of twelve numbers which are boxes along the layout on the opposite side from the croupier. These are called 1st 12, 2nd 12, and 3rd 12. If the ball lands on one of the numbers 1 through 12 and you have bet on the 1st 12, you will win. The payout will be two to one.

5. You can bet in one of the three boxes at the bottom of the layout. These are called Column bets and pay if the ball lands in the column above your bet. This bet also pays two to one.
