Barber shifts smoothly to Jackaby's American accent and confident tone, establishing his role as Abigail's mentor. Dialogue between the two characters is excellent, whether its tone is bantering or conciliatory. Minor characters--trolls, ghosts, and shape-shifters--are clearly defined.
