Description: This is the fifth edition of one of the major textbooks in pediatric critical care. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive review of the principles of practice along with the science of pediatric critical care. This edition includes access to an electronic version.
Audience: Pediatricians coming into contact with the critical care unit and intensivists in all disciplines and levels of training caring for children are the intended audience. The book is written by a group of authors representing the multidisciplinary, multinational pool of providers contributing to thought leadership in pediatric critical care medicine.
Features: This large book covers the origins of pediatric critical care, and describes patterns of pediatric mortality in developed and underdeveloped countries. It reviews technologies ranging from simple vascular access to sophisticated mechanical cardiopulmonary support. After presentations on the conduct of critical care practice, which are relevant to providers in any unit, providing critical care to children is presented by organ system. Cardiopulmonary critical care receives great emphasis with several chapters featuring details of mechanical cardiopulmonary support and hemodynamic monitoring. Other organs receiving attention include the gut, kidney, endocrine, immune, and other blood components. Infection and immune response to critical illness get ample attention, but transplantation and injury in children receives relatively little coverage. Chapters are clearly written and highlight key concepts with bullet points, which are linked to detailed explanations in the chapter. All presentations include detailed reference lists with many classic citations, but newer entries date to within three to four years of publication. Art work including photographs and line drawings is extremely well done. Presentations are well supported by tables, line drawings, and photographs. The book ends with a detailed appendix of common equations and an elaborate subject index.
Assessment: This is the second major work in this discipline recently released. Compared to the four-volume work, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, 2nd edition, Wheeler et al. (Springer, 2014), this book lacks detail on important subjects, such as mechanical ventilation, that are discussed at great length in the larger book. However, this book must be acknowledged for its portability and the easy adaptability of the accompanying ebook version. Practitioners in any of the disciplines contributing to the care of critically ill children will benefit from the information gathered here.
