George McCrae vaulted into the popular consciousness with
Rock Your Baby, a record that also established the commercial viability of the fledgling Miami
disco sound. The chart-topping title cut remains the quintessence of the
TK Records production ethic, its sun-kissed textures and trance-like rhythms perfectly complemented by
McCrae's buoyant vocal. Unfortunately, the remainder of the LP feels like a rush job, with most of the material simply reworking the
"Rock Your Baby" formula to diminishing returns. (There's even a
"Rock Your Baby Reprise.") Only the funky
"I Get Lifted" rises above paint-by-numbers mediocrity. ~ Jason Ankeny
