Overview

Imagine traveling a river through time. You float by Native Americans trapping beaver and pass boats full of European settlers. You spy waterwheels turning and factories buzzing with activity. Finally modern cities crowd the banks. Dive into this book, and learn about the changing lives of people in the Hudson River Valley.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

04/01/2014
Gr 2–4—A simple time-line structure traces the settlement and migration of various peoples, from the earliest Native Americans to present day citizens, within American geographic environments. Each double-page spread features a summary (with dates) of how the successive communities adapted or changed their environments, complemented by a large, captioned photograph or reproduction of a period illustration. Each title emphasizes the positive contributions of groups and minimizes conflicts among them. Terms are defined on each page, and the books end with an "Amazing but True" section, a page with two questions based on elements of Common Core instruction, and a code for access to content on Capstone's "Fact Hound" website. These attractive offerings provide an easily understood introduction to how geography influences migration and societal structures, and how it affects the lives of people past and present. Solid choices for emerging readers.
