Overview

The Xikrin are a subgroup of the relatively large rainforest people, the Kayapo, unknown to the outside world in the 1950s and now sophisticated political operators in defence of their way of life. Like other Native American groups, their music -- much of it involving powerful choral singing -- is in the service of a wider spiritual esthetic involving dance and visual arts. This sampling of lengthy extracts from various Xikrin ceremonies is supported by an extremely thorough 76-page booklet. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
