This clever title in the Queens of the Animal Universe series (6 titles) highlights the girl power found in ring-tailed lemur troops and may sneakily attract readers who are more often drawn to fiction. Jaycox explains that these troops are led by females (known as “princesses”), which are responsible for protecting their territory, have the right to eat before male troop members do, groom each other, and raise their young cooperatively. Princesses outrank males and thus come out on top in any confrontation. The book covers general facts about ring-tailed lemurs and their habitat in Madagascar, as well as the threats they face. True to the title, about half the book is devoted specifically to female lemurs and their roles in their troops. The book’s numerous photos showcase these animals well, including a good number of action shots. Standard back matter also includes “Amazing Lemur” facts and a brief “Read More” section. Though the book may hold special interest for girls, anyone fascinated by animals will enjoy learning more about these unusual and endangered creatures.
