Overview

"Riding for the Brand" is the personal history of Lawrence H. "Larry" Lee, who started with Western Airlines in 1943 as a baggage handler, and worked his way up to Chairman of the Board. Larry led the company during turbulent times. He was responsible for establishing a "hub" in Salt Lake City, Utah and did so in just a few short months, and with very little capital. Larry believed in miracles, and knew they could happen with hard work and dedication. He was instrumental in negotiations with Western's five union groups, and established a profit sharing plan. The day that his retirement was celebrated in Salt Lake City in 1986, the airline reported the highest annual profit in its 60 year history.

About the Author

Riding for the Brand is the autobiography of Lawrence H. "Larry" Lee. Larry started working for Western Airlines in 1943, at the age of 16, and eventually became CEO and Chairman of the Board. During his 43 years with Western Airlines, Larry worked in many different capacities, and was instrumental in creating a "hub" in Salt Lake City, Utah, in just 3 short months, a task most thought was impossible. Larry also helped to bring Western back from the brink of bankruptcy by working with the unions, implementing profit sharing, and leading by example. Larry truly "rode for the brand" and his loyalty and leadership were admired by many. On the day Larry retired in 1986, Western Airlines posted the highest profit in its 60 year history.
