Overview

Our 1972 motorcycle ride took us on a four-thousand-mile trip from Arizona to Canada and back. Some nights we camped out along the highway; other nights we found a motel. Some days the rain was fierce and debilitating... but every day was fun and filled with great experiences and amazing landscapes. Each of us rode a 500cc two-stroke motorcycle on the journey. We had no cell phones, roadside assistance coverage, custom ear plugs, or sound systems. The attractions of the open road, Canada, and Yellowstone Park were very powerful. None of us worried about breaking down or the costs of the trip. We were filled with youthful confidence in ourselves and our machines. The three of us had places to go and places to see. And we made it!

About the Author

Jim Balding was born in Casa Grande AZ. He was raised around various cotton gin yards in Southern Arizona and learned to tinker with all things mechanical, as seen in the tales of his early experiences with motorcycles. Jim attended schools in Maricopa, Marana, and Stanfield Arizona before attending Casa Grande Union High School where he met Larry Christopher and Jeffrey Ross. He then enrolled at Central Arizona College for mechanical and technical courses. Following graduation, Jim worked as a cotton gin operator for over forty years. He is currently retired and lives with his wife and "wiener" dogs in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Jeffrey Ross is an Op-Ed writer, rockabilly musician, and former full-time community college teacher. He has had four "Views" pieces published on InsidehigherEd.com since 2007, has authored and co-authored several op-ed articles on community college identity, purpose, and culture, and has had several pieces published on the Cronk News higher education satire website. Eight of his books have been previously published by Rogue Phoenix Press (Salem Oregon):
