About the Author

Virginia Blakeney was born in Sylvarena, Mississippi, and grew up in Jackson. She developed a strong love of history as a child living with her great-grandfather, a Civil War veteran who died when she was twelve.

She took a keen interest in her family lineage and its ties with history, which include Captain John Blakeney, who fought with Gen. Francis Marion, driving the British out of South Carolina during the American Revolution. She has learned there has been a Blakeney in every American military conflict since.

Always an artist, Virginia drew portraits of babies when she was fifteen years old. Her skills include oil painting and other media as well as clothing design. She designed content for the Astrodome scoreboard and the Auburn University War Eagle emblem, has written and published songs, and sang with a band briefly. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sam Houston State University, then taught the academically gifted while maintaining her art studio.

In later years she traveled extensively with her late husband, Dr. Russell F. Briner. Although she has lived in Mississippi, Alabama, and New Orleans, she considers San Antonio her home and has lived there for the past thirty-one years.

Her knowledge of history and art comes together to shape her first novel, Richilene Trunk, which follows the long journey made by so many families between Europe and what we call the Deep South.
