About the Author

“Goldsby has seen it all from her piano and she dishes it up with a true storyteller’s gusto. As refreshing as a frozen daiquiri . . .” Jeff Yanc, Book Sense Picks and Notables.

“Goldsby has wicked sense of humor and a keen eye for the absurd. This is big-hearted, truly eye-opening memoir” Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Robin Meloy Goldsby is the author of RHYTHM: A Novel, and Piano Girl: A Memoir. Her thirty-year career as a musician has taken her from roadside dives to New York City’s poshest venues, exclusive resorts, and on to the European castles where she now performs. Robin has three solo piano recordings to her name: Twilight, Somewhere in Time, and Songs from the Castle, and has appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered and Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland. Robin is a Steinway Artist. She currently lives in Cologne, Germany with her husband—jazz bassist John Goldsby—and their two children.
Piano Girl: A Memoir, Goldsby’s first book, made its hardcover debut in spring, 2005. The book includes a collection of autobiographical short stories–some funny, some poignant–that explore the life of a working musician. A giddy mixture of droll hilarity and pathos, Piano Girl is an entertaining and enlightening memoir of music and life as a cocktail pianist. The book provides a rare glimpse into the comedies, tragedies, and mundane miracles witnessed from the player’s side of the grand piano.

Piano Girl received a prestigious “starred review” from Publishers Weekly and was honored as one of the picks of the summer by Book Sense, the leading organization representing independent bookstores in the United States. Goldsby’s many radio appearances include NPR’s All Things Considered, the Leonard Lopate Show in New York City, The Mark Farrell Show on CD 101.9, and most recently, Marian McPartland’s NPR Piano Jazz. Piano Girl is now available—world-wide—in paperback.

Goldsby's second book, Rhythm: A Novel tells the story of teenage drummer Jane Bowman. She’s fifteen, funny, and wounded by the fiery death of her famous Latin-jazz percussionist mother. This
touching and humorous coming-of-age musical odyssey invites readers to tap their toes in time
to Jane’s powerful music—cheering her on as she mends her shattered heart, finds her groove, and discovers the tragic beauty of human resilience.

“Goldsby’s first novel spans 15 years in the life of her gritty, resilient protagonist and is told with lyrical prose and deft characterization. Well-written, sympathetically earnest fiction.”
