Description: This comprehensive text discusses the full scope of nursing care and management of the patient with rheumatic disease. Major contents covered include anatomy and physiology, immunogenicity related to rheumatic diseases, psychosocial issues, nutrition, and other related nursing issues. Each chapter begins with expected outcomes and ends with providing action points for practice points for the reader; these are helpful tips to summarize and assess learning.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a rheumatology text for registered nurses that may be used for clinical practice as well as for continuing education. The objectives of the book are practical and worthy. There are very few rheumatology texts for nurses, particularly with this amount of depth and comprehensiveness. This book meets the editor's objectives in a comprehensive yet user friendly fashion.
Audience: The targeted audience is nurses working at the post-basic level, possibly pre-registered nurses, and perhaps for nurses who pursue continuing education. Nurses working in the areas of rheumatology, orthopedic surgery, and on general medical/surgical units will find this text helpful to their practice. I agree with the proposed targeted audience; I do not believe it is written for advanced practice nurses. The editor and the many contributors are well educated and experts in their fields. Much knowledge and expertise is demonstrated through the contents of this expansive text.
Features: It begins with an overview of the musculoskeletal system and moves to a description of the pathology and clinical manifestations of various connective tissue diseases. The correlation and importance of immune mediated responses to autoimmune processes is presented in an organized and easily understood format. Other chapters discuss assessment of patients with rheumatic diseases and psychosocial aspects of connective tissue disease. Succeeding chapters discuss problems related to the patient with chronic illness that affect the physical well being and health of persons with an inflammatory arthropathy. The subject areas that are well covered include pain/stiffness, skin/nutrition, pharmacokinetics, and complementary therapeutic modalities. Graphic tables and charts are provided to correlate to the text. Although many credible clinical review articles and texts are used, sufficient empirical research-based articles are lacking.
Assessment: This text is thorough and provides concise, practical information for the management of the rheumatology patient. It can be easily recognized as an essential part of specialty care reference material in the compendium of nursing literature. It can be considered a primer for nurses studying about the patient with rheumatic disease.
