Description: This is a new edition of a classic review book that covers medical microbiology. The previous edition was published in 2004. This field changes quickly and thus updated information on infectious diseases is needed regularly.
Purpose: The main purpose of this book is to assist students in preparing for the national board exams. It provides a large number of practice exam questions as well as cases to achieve this objective.
Audience: This book is written primarily for second year medical students. The author has had many years of experience in teaching medical students and has incorporated this experience into this review book.
Features: All the different sections of medical microbiology are covered. The book starts with the basic concepts including the structure and growth of bacterial cells, the response of the host to infection, antimicrobial agents, and vaccine strategies. Specific sections covering the various types of pathogens follow this introductory section. Over 500 practice questions and clinical cases conclude the book. The one addition that would make this an outstanding review book would be the inclusion of more photos depicting the infectious agents. High quality images are currently used in examinations to test the student on recognition of pathogens.
Assessment: This is a good book for reviewing medical microbiology. After examining a number of similar texts and teaching students in this area, I would assess this book as adequate but average. However, at a cost of $40, it is not a big investment for medical students and would be helpful during their preparation for national examinations.
