Mullen is not your average quilt designer (thus the alternate spelling of "brakes" in the title). She doesn't do little square blocks or rectangular strips but prefers crooked lines, carefree piecing, and irregular shapes. Her earlier book, Cut-Loose Quilts, introduced her brand of simple cutting and piecing methods. Here she simplifies the process of reverse appliqu . Mullen's take on reverse appliqu -sandwiching a "secret layer" between a backing and a top layer and cutting the top layer to reveal the secret one-is so simple that she describes it step by step in a single page. Variations on this process, however, occupy an entire book and just scratch the surface of the possible. Six projects illustrate the technique, but the meat of the book is in learning the process and building upon Mullen's ideas.
