"Footprints" introduces life's double shadow, a force that can create or destroy. "Jubal," the forebear of music in ancient Hebraic tradition, is bound to this force whose shadow motif joins the mind's unifying "Fides" (trust, fidelity) mythos-of-memory with its flipside, the divisive "Phobos" (fear, envy, ego) Logos-of-reason. The shadow begets art, love, intimacy, philosophy, and, of course, music. It begets mathematics and science even as it seduces vain mortals into "Either/Or" and "Us against Them" divisions and woke-fearing, hasty impulses.
Volume III (Chapters 19-25), describes the author's return to California to new friends, colleagues, projects, reflections on marriage, and genealogical searches of his ancestors. He worked (1970-1980) first in radiobiology research at UCLA and then teaching chemistry at Duarte High (CA), Cal Poly-SLO, and UC Santa Cruz. This dovetailed with an inspiring collaboration with mathematician Therese "Terry" Braithwaite and portended important innovations: the Ven Matrix of a System, teaching the principles of systems science in Silicon Valley's wafer-fab industry, and in a third career transmuting into a national spokesperson (1985-1995) for the arts and arts education in an era of High-Tech. Prior to Silicon Valley came a summer 1978 NEH (National Endowment for Humanities) workshop at Michigan State on the functions of discourse in science and literature—followed closely by a cathartic, theta-delta dream state encounter on the Mojave Desert.
Ultimately, "Footprints" will shed new light on today's world and, just perhaps, the meaning of existence in our growing wisdom of quantum relativity, Jung's psychology, and Nature's God.
