MARCH 2018 - AudioFile

Dozens of voice professionals could have performed this well-organized guide with more vocal appeal and energy than the author does. She’s a comfortable speaker, friendly and easy to understand, but her slow reading lacks the energy that her message of empowerment deserves. She knows her field well and covers a lot of choices that retirees will face without making her book pedantic or cluttered. Frequently illustrating her points with case studies from her counseling practice, she emphasizes that people should plan for the transition from work to retirement—disengaging from their old career, assessing their skills, exploring their values and interests, and taking action in spite of uncertainty. The audiobook itself provides a wonderful framework for listeners to begin planning for a life of more freedom, richer connections with others, and new opportunities to express their talents and passions. Career counselor Ryan offers a handy and easy-to-follow guide to shaping one’s future. While the author was personally motivated to plan for retirement by a health scare, she cautions readers to benefit from what she learned and “live for now.” To get readers started, Ryan throws out some big questions: “Who are you going to be as you age?” “What is meaningful to you now?” For anyone stuck, fear not; Ryan breaks the process into digestible bites: start by making up a bucket list, take some time to complete the values assessment, and consider one’s hobbies (for those who don’t have any, consult the extensive list). There’s help in deciding where to spend retirement (it’s not all vacation living), making new friends, and turning hobbies into part-time jobs. And for those readers who want to start their own businesses, take note: there are a lot of entrepreneurs in the 55–64 age group, Ryan writes. Ryan provides ideas, quizzes, lists for each topic she covers, and comforting encouragement in this valuable resource. Agent: Jane Von Mehren, Aevitas Creative Management. (Mar.)
