Overview

Fourth in the series of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries, Anne Perry's Resurrection Row explores the dark undercurrents that run through the lives of the idle rich in Victorian England. After a wonderful night at the theatre, Thomas and Charlotte find themselves confronted with a corpse in the driver's seat of a hansom cab. Even more shocking-it is the body of a peer of the realm who had been decently buried the week before. While the doctor insists Lord Fitzroy-Hammond died a natural death, the Pitts find the situation anything but natural. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Inspector Pitt begins his investigation within the proper channels while his intrepid wife Charlotte renews a tie from her past to get inside Lord Fitzroy-Hammond's world. But as they dig their way closer the truth, they find themselves in danger from forces who will do anything to keep it buried.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Few mystery writers this side of Arthur Conan Doyle can evoke Victorian London with such relish for detail and mood.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Anne Perry has made the Victorian era her own literary preserve. . . . Perry’s work is consistently top-notch.”—San Diego Union

“Perry is my choice for today’s best mystery writer of Victoriana.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“When Anne Perry puts Thomas and Charlotte Pitt on the case, we are in exemplary Victorian company.”—New York Times

OCT/NOV 01 - AudioFile

Perry turns over some rocks, or in this case tombstones, in Victorian England, and at least one slimy individual crawls out. It seems corpses are being disinterred and posed all over London. It's up to Inspector Thomas Pitt to investigate. Davina Porter gives a faultless performance; not a word of the text goes unappreciated. As the gulf between rich and poor is made clear in the story, that gulf is mirrored in Porter's differentiated accents and speech patterns. Her tone amply reinforces the emotions of the text--whether weariness, love, snobbery or disgust. Clipper has already released several Perry-Pitt-Porter collaborations, and at least one more is in the works. J.B.G. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine
