Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of neurodegenerative disorder in the elderly, is characterized pathologically by extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, pathophysiologically by synaptic dysfunction, and clinically by a progressive decline in cognition.
