Description: This is the second edition of an introduction to the basics of research and evidence-based practice. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce students to the basic elements of a piece of research to help them understand the research process and critically appraise the research for evidence-based practice. These are important objectives, especially with a focus on providing evidence-based care.
Audience: The target audience is preregistration nurses and healthcare students and postregistration program practitioners. Both authors are healthcare researchers who have worked in multidisciplinary research.
Features: The book covers the essentials of quantitative and qualitative research methods and the basics of common statistical procedures. It also includes a chapter on critiquing research reports and an introduction to evidence-based practice and clinical effectiveness, before covering writing a research report and the dissemination of research. Each chapter has key points, points and questions, exercises, references for further reading, and web links, and the book offers a list of common research terms. The authors state that this edition has been broadened to target healthcare students and well as nursing students. One weakness is in the references and suggestions for further readings, which contain some outdated books.
Assessment: This book is aimed at students who are learning about evidence-based practice and have little understanding of research and research methods. It should not replace the usual research textbook.
