Description: This general overview of veterinary care of reptiles is not an advanced, in-depth look at the field, but rather a starting point for private practitioners or students. The book often presents large amounts of information in tables, which makes finding specific species-related or disease-related information much easier.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of the basics, hitting on the major topics that veterinarians could see in practice. The book could be a stepping stone for those just starting out, so they don't have to dive directly into the more advanced Current Therapy in Reptile Medicine and Surgery, Mader (Elsevier, 2014). It would not be particularly engaging for clinicians experienced in reptile medicine, but that is not its purpose.
Audience: The book is designed for practitioners in a busy clinical practice, although it also would be a great learning tool for students. It is not advanced enough for those in residency or pursuing advanced credentials. All authors are recognized experts in the field and hold advanced credentials related to zoo, exotic animal, or reptile medicine. Furthermore, the list of contributors contains highly renowned experts from around the globe.
Features: This overview of reptile medicine and surgery focuses on topics that would be important in clinical practice (husbandry, diagnostic plans, commonly encountered diseases, common procedures, etc.). It is not particularly innovative, but it wasn't meant to be. It is engaging to readers not because of flashy pictures or novel content, but because it is easy to read and follow. There are a variety of shortcomings, some related to content, but most related to formatting and labeling. Just in chapter 13, there are numerous instances of the figures and their references not matching. Figure 13.1 is referenced in the snake section but the pictures show restraint of a chameleon. Figure 13.2 is supposed to show an iguana being restrained away from the body, but this is not apparent from the picture and, furthermore, the picture does not show restraint of the tail. Figure 13.6 shows a basilisk being tube fed, but the text notes to watch for the glottis when tube feeding; the picture should show a picture of a glottis during feeding, not a general reptile being tube fed. Occasionally, pictures seem to be used just to have a picture, not to add to the content. For example, there are two blood collection pictures from the ventral tail vein in a lizard and one from the supravertebral sinus in a turtle. The book does not show blood collection in a snake, nor the more common techniques of the subcarapacial sinus or jugular vein in turtles; these would be much more helpful to clinicians.
Assessment: The book does what it set out to do — provide a general overview of a very large and diverse topic in a way that is easy to understand for someone either just starting or seeing everyday reptile cases through a busy practice. It will be a great aid in teaching veterinary and tech students and sparking their interest in this field. It does not touch the Mader in terms of quality of content and breadth of material, so it is nowhere close to replacing it as the standard of reptile medicine, but it is a solid, supplemental source of information.
