In 1962 a stray dog was found under a pile of boxes in a Coast Guard warehouse in what used to be called Government Island, the Coast Guard Base in San Francisco Bay, when a seaman named Dave Bunch was mopping the floor. It was love at first sight. At first the men decided to hide the pup from the Commander, thinking she wouldn’t be allowed. But soon enough all of the men in the barracks fell hard for the little dog. Then one day when high waves challenged another vessel at sea, it was Vera’s fierce determination and natural swimming ability that brought the life preserver and safety line to the sinking boat. Vera became a hero and the beloved pet and mascot of the San Francisco Coast Guard.

About the Author

Patricia Polacco belongs to a family of storytellers, poets, farmers, teachers, and artists. They came from many parts of the world, but mainly Russia. She grew up to be an illustrator, a designer, and creator of many beloved children’s books, including The Keeping Quilt, The Blessing Cup, Fiona’s Lace, The Trees of the Dancing Goats, Babushka’s Doll, My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, Sticks and Stones, and Palace of Books. In this moving and loosely autobiographical offering, Polacco (The Mermaid’s Purse) recounts the story of Vera, an “ancient little yellow dog” she met in 1962 while visiting a relative stationed on a Coast Guard base near San Francisco. Polacco describes how the dog was found abandoned, adopted by Coast Guard cadets, and named Vera by a cadet named Davie Bunch. Vera “became a constant fixture in the barracks” and even took part in some intrepid rescues. Polacco’s characteristically conversational prose and emotionally redolent art showcase Vera’s heroic exploits, which included jumping off a cutter to deliver rope to people on a sinking sailboat and leaping into frigid waters to save passengers on a capsized ferry. Polacco herself enters the story in the poignant finale: she was volunteering at the SPCA in Oakland on the day in 1967 that a cadet brought the ailing Vera in to be put to sleep. It’s difficult to say where the story diverts from real life (did Bunch actually exist, for example, or was he invented for this book?), though an afterword details the author’s successful quest to locate Vera’s grave marker. The men in the unit were charmed by the playful mutt but feared their commander, the Ol' Man, would give her away if she were discovered, so they kept her hidden. One day, a distress call came in from a sailboat caught in a horrific storm, and the company (including the Ol' Man) raced out to aid the trapped passengers. The harsh winds and unforgiving rip currents prevented any rescue attempts, and it was at that moment that Vera appeared on deck. The men convinced the Ol' Man that she could swim out and bring a lifeline to the terrified passengers, and in desperation he agreed. It was a tremendous and daring effort that resulted not only in saved lives but also in a lifelong friendship between the commander and Vera. Polacco expertly depicts the enduring love between man and canine through her engaging text and energetic and joyous illustrations. The book chronicles even more courageous rescues by Vera, and the ending will pull at heartstrings. Never maudlin, this inspiring offering is sure to captivate. Polacco's own role in the story is intriguing, and the author's note will spark lively conversation. VERDICT It's hard to resist a tale about a heroic dog, and there is no use in even trying with this latest title by the esteemed author/illustrator. A stirring tribute to an abandoned dog who became a Coast Guard hero.Inspired by true stories about a dog she actually met in the 1960s, Polacco's dramatic tale features two nautical rescues in which Vera—an unofficial (at first) mascot on what is now called Coast Guard Island in the San Francisco Bay area—played significant, lifesaving roles. Midsized, flop-eared, and wholly winning, Vera is surrounded in the ink-and-marker illustrations with adoring sailors of diverse skin tone who eagerly adopt her as a puppy in an early illustration, though her reception by the commander is not so assured. With her nautical heroics she eventually even wins over the base's crusty, cigar-chomping "Ol' Man." The author herself comes into view years later when, as a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals worker, she witnesses the old dog's last days and formal military burial beneath a memorial of crossed anchors. Though some, maybe all, of the dialogue is invented (" ‘Cast off, mates—lives hang in the balance!' he bellowed"), a closing photo taken on a recent visit to the island attests to the memorial's existence, and Polacco's account of her search for it makes a mildly suspenseful coda. A fitting addition to the annals of doggy courage. (Picture book. 7-9)
