Overview

Second only to religion, cricket is the most inspirational entity in the Caribbean and the British Commonwealth. And second only to the University of the West Indies, the most integrating factor in the English speaking Caribbean. As a Caribbean experience, it is arguably one of the most shared and relateable. One of the reasons why I wrote this story is because I think that the game has a significant role to play in the future development of the region.

CHAPTER 1

Dear Santa,

My mommy and daddy have plans to spend Christmas in the Caribbean this year, and I am unhappy. I don't think Christmas is as much fun there as it is in Toronto. But I love Mommy and Daddy, and I am very happy for them. I know they will be happy to see their homeland again. I would like to stay here, but I am just almost five, and I cannot stay here all by myself. My brothers, Barclay, Barry, and Brand, are going too. So would you please send our presents there instead? Barclay would like an iPod, Barry would like a Roboboy, and Brand would like a bicycle, just like the one you brought for Barry last year. And remember, Santa, I want a Black Barbie Princess.

Thanks, Santa, Caroline Brave

And so it was that Barclay, Barry, Brand, and Caroline received their presents at their Caribbean destination on Christmas morning. They were all happy with their presents, especially Barry, who immediately fell in love with his shining red Roboboy. It was love at first sight.

"Awesome!" he shouted excitedly. "Aaah man, this is sooo cool!"

He ran his hands along the smooth limbs, repeating to himself, "Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Aaawesome!"

When he had finally gotten over his initial joy, Barry held his new toy in one hand and stared at it. Then he walked around the room, his arms outstretched, still staring at the robot as if getting to know it. The robot stared back demurely. Finally, after four turns around the room, Barry asked the robot, "What shall I call you?"

Soon the robot could say his name: Reginald.

Barry introduced Reginald to his brothers, sister, and parents in that order. Reggie shook their hands. "I am very pleased to meet you," he said to each of them in turn. "My name is Reginald, but you can call me Reggie."

Reggie was a hit. The family loved him. The boys soon introduced him to their new friends, Kevin and the boys. "I am very pleased to make your acquaintance," he said to each one. "My name is Reginald, but my friends call me Reggie." The boys applauded and laughed out in an uproar. High fives went throughout the group, including to the lone robot.

The boys in the neighbourhood had taught the brothers how to play cricket. Barclay, Barry, and Brand had lots of fun learning to play the new game, the Caribbean's favorite pastime. Dad Trevor, usually busy in Toronto, had even come out to play and to give them pointers as was needed and as he thought fit.
