About the Author

Trena' L. Matthew was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. She fell in love with poetry at an early age and began writing poetry in elementary school. She is a mother and teacher. She also served 12 years in the U.S. Army. This is her debut book of poetry. She says there is more to come from her in the future.

I haven't read every poem in it yet but it has the same sort of beauty to it that a scar can have. A scar is beautiful when you remember it mean you are alive despite something that tried to harm or even kill you. This poetry is beautiful because you know that the subjects of these poems, and the author herself, knows that kind of pain and used it to create something new. That something she created is a life in and of itself, with words like heartbeats in stages of passion, anger, and peace.
