Reformers and Their Stepchildren
The Reformation that erupted in Europe in the 16th century was a glorious exhibition of the power of God to keep His Word and His gospel of grace before world. Many have recognized that the reformers were not homogeneous nor were they pure and without sin or spiritual blindness, in part.

Most historians have described the most visible division amongst the reformers as that between the Magisterial Reformers and the Radicals. Verduin chose to call the Radicals "Stepchildren." This book is an insightful look at the divide between these two groups and the consequences of being blind to one's own personal traditions.

About the Author

Leonard Verduin was born on March 9, 1897, in South Holland, Illinois, a city founded in the 1840s by Dutch immigrants from the province of South Holland and located a few miles south of Chicago. A large number of these immigrants were religious dissidents (Afgescheidenen) who had seceded from the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands in the 1830s. These dissidents were much affected by the pietistic movement of that time and wanted to revitalize the Reformed Church, restoring it to its seventeenth-century authenticity. Verduin authored this title, Anatomy of a Hybrid, The First Amendment and the Remnant, and Honor Your Mother.

Stuart Brogden is the author of Captive to the Word of God - A Particular Perspective on Reformed and Covenant Theology and the editor of this Baptist Reprints series.
