Launching a series devoted to the genealogical analysis of the discourses of reflection, Sandywell (sociology, U. of York) traces the differences between the traditional discourses of reflection and the experiences of reflexivity in everyday, social, and philosophical thought. He contends that such an examination requires an exploration of the force field between the discourses of reflection and reflexivity, which in turn requires radical self-investigations of the role of reflexivity in human experience and the language, practices, and institutions of self-reflection in western culture. This achieved, he introduces a method for analyzing the crucial transformation of thought from a videological to dialogical conception of the world. The analytic method provides a framework for the detailed studies of premodern, modern, and postmodern form of reflexivity to be presented in subsequent volumes of the series. Annotation c.
