Reeds Vol 3: Applied Thermodynamics for Marine Engineers
This authoritative textbook will cover the principal topics in thermodynamics for officer cadets studying Merchant Navy Marine Engineering Certificates of Competency (CoC) as well as the core syllabi in thermodynamics for undergraduate students in marine engineering, naval architecture and other marine technology related programmes. It will cover the laws of thermodynamics and of perfect gases, their principles and application in a marine environment.

This new edition will be fully updated to reflect the recent changes to the Merchant Navy syllabus and current pathways to a sea-going engineering career, including National Diplomas, Higher National Diploma and degree courses. This new content will focus on how the the formulae and calculations apply to the actual workplace, and these updates will open up the potential market in the UK as well as appealing to more of the international market.

Each chapter has fully worked examples interwoven into the text, with test examples at the end of each chapter. Other revisions include new material on combined steam and motor propulsion systems, expanded sections on different IC engine cycles, information on the modern use of steam and gas turbines for the production of electrical power, and more.

Table of Contents

Contents with specific details of the new material

Introduction

More emphasis on the international nature of the qualification and the reasons for studying science within engineering

IS units and common terms

General update and include additional ideas especially for the new combined steam and motor propulsion systems. Review test examples

Heat

Change and update the text to explain about the nature of heat to international students.

Thermal expansion

Practical examples to help the international students understand the concepts. Check carefully the worked examples

Heat transfer

Update Figure 4.6 for clarity. Check through all example problems and solutions and update where required

Law of perfect gasses

Update/expand wording for better understanding by international students eg Fig 5.1 needs more clarity. Explain Avodagro's Law better for international students. Expand out 'Enthalpy' and 'open systems'. Check the 'Test Examples'

Expansion and compression of perfect gasses

Explain/expand out and/or change/update formulae such as those shown on page 86. Check all worked examples. Check page 91 – reference to state point 1 and 2'

IC engines: elementary principles

Expand the 'other engine cycles' such as the Miller Cycle and the Atkinson Cycle. Update drawings and diagnostics of engine faults. Increase thermal efficiency explanation

IC engine cycles

Expand the detailed explanations of different IC engine cycles. Check test examples

Reciprocating air compressors

Update drawings and text for international students. Check the test examples.

Steam

Update the Waste heat recovery system. Update/change the section on 'Steam Tables' (This is a significant change and needs careful consideration as published 'steam tables' are no longer available and the online versions are not straight forward to follow). Check test examples

Entropy

Definition of the word 'abscissae' and more of an explanation of 'Entropy' for the international students

Turbines

Expand the explanation of the modern use of steam and gas turbines for the production of electrical power in the latest 'Hybrid' power systems.

Boilers and combustion

Expand 'combustion' to include the latest 'Selective Catalytic Reduction' (SCR) technology for the reduction of harmful emissions in Diesel Exhaust.

Refrigeration

Increase the detail about the modern refrigerants and change all the worked examples over to include the modern gasses.

Worked examples

Check all the steps in the calculation to ensure that International Students will be able to follow each one easily
