Overview

It is a contemporary tale
of a male rez child's odyssey,
searching for home and identity,
in a place where shelter instability
is a way of life.
Oftentimes suddenly.
Life on the plains has never been easy.

Redmoon chronicles the day to day
realities of growing up in tribes
in Montana and Oklahoma.
Although the adversities are universal.
the frequency, intensity and early age of
encounter are familiar to indigenous youth.

Redmoon is a precocious hero in the making.
He is unaware of historical trauma,
and of his future as a leader and healer,
both physical and spiritual.

On March 27, 1863, Chief Standing in the Water met with
Abraham Lincoln at White House,
along with 13 other southern plains leaders.
He and White Antilope were among the first two chiefs
killed at the Sand Creek Massacre on November 29, 1864,
along with approximately 200 other Cheyenne.

The saga and quest for healing continues in Denny Standing
Water Jr's series, with Memories in the Sand next.

James Hollis McCrory, MD Pediatrician
Northern Cheyenne Service Unit 2013-2017

About the Author

Denny Standing Water, Jr. was born in Elk City, Oklahoma, in 1980. His mother was a Northern Cheyenne and his father a Southern Cheyenne. She grew up in Lame Deer, Montana, on reservation. His father grew up in Hammon, Oklahoma, near the homeland of the southern tribe, where there is no reservation. Father and son are descendants of Chief Standing Water, a victim of the Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado on November 29, 1864.

Denny describes himself as a ‘’writer, speaker, adventurer, art enthusiast, warrior, brother to many nations. Recovered alcoholic, drug addict and criminal. Crime was never a choice. But the only way to survive on the streets. I had three teachers tell me that I would never write a book. And that I would never amount to anything. I plan on writing more. I have a lot of story’s and adventures to tell. I hope you continue to enjoy something I was never supposed to do. Write. Live life and help my community. I currently work in diabetes prevention on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. The eyes that I look out of today will never be the eyes and mind of who I was at 20. I love being older. Now in my 40s, my love of life is growing by the day. And I hope my stories give you an idea of the life of an indigenous soul.’’
