There first few interactions are prickly, since both have strong personalities, and are unlikely to be cowed by the other. Over time, they come to a meeting of the minds, and by the end of the book...well, you'll just have to read it. Written at the time of WWI, patriotism is evident throughout most but not all of the community. Black and his female friend, Jane, enlist and are sent immediately to France, Black as a chaplain, Jane as a nurse.
