About the Author

Dawn Menken, PhD, is a teacher, psychotherapist, and conflict facilitator. She is a certified process worker and is one of the founding members of the Process Work Institutes in both Portland and Zurich, Switzerland. Arnold Mindell, PhD, is known for his development of the “dreambody” and process work. He is the author of 21 books in 27 languages, including ProcessMind, The Shaman's Body, and Sitting in the Fire. They both live in Portland, Oregon.

In this useful handbook, Menken, a conflict-resolution educator and mother, tackles the principles of conflict resolution in child rearing, encouraging parents to develop empathy in kids and foster a sense of self-determination even in the youngest children. Menken also describes effective ways of speaking with her young son about things like mortality, while respecting his unique viewpoint and learning from him, instead of just teaching him. Menken clearly has a great deal of experience with children, and it shows here. She deftly and succinctly explores how parenting techniques affect adult relationships as well as relationships with children. Menken proves herself a gifted writer and parents will find much value in her take on child rearing.
