About the Author

I am originally from upper state New York. I graduated from John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix, New York, and attended Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College in Morrisville, New York. I grew up with dogs and have had dogs most of my adult life. I am presently volunteering at the Sumter County Humane Society in Florida and have volunteered at the Ark of Cleveland in Tennessee. I have been chosen as Volunteer of the Month at both Sumter County Humane Society and the Ark of Cleveland and have been written up in the local newspaper in Tennessee and on the Sumter County Humane Society website. Volunteering at a Humane Society is such a wonderful experience that it is hard to put into words what it means to me and all the special moments that I have had working there. They are a happy and sad place to work in. The happy part is giving the animals all the love I can when I’m there and getting attached to them. The happy/sad time is when they are adopted and they go to their “furever homes.” These animals just want to be loved and to find their furever homes where the love we give them will continue for the rest of their lives. There’s a write-up I found of “Lessons I’ve Learned from Dogs” that I try to live by and is reinforced while working at the Humane Society. They are (1) never stop playing; (2) wag more, bark less; (3) be loyal and faithful; (4) be quick to forgive; and (5) love unconditionally. Cats are far more independent than dogs, but they are also very affectionate and want that same love as well. Being a volunteer gives me a feeling of a sense of accomplishment that I have helped to make their lives better.

CHAPTER 1

My name is Royal Jasper. When my furever family adopted me from Sumter County SPCA, the kennel manager Carol had named me Rags. But my new mom changed my name to Royal Jasper. I have gone from Rags to riches!

After Mom rescued me she thought I'd look cute taking a nap on my sofa snuggling with my new stuffed lion. Sometimes I'm not asleep, I'm peeking just a little bit. Did you know Shih Tzu's come from a long line of royal pups? They are known as the "little lion" dog because of their mane-like fur.

Now that Mom adopted me I have my own table and chair so I can have meals with my family. My food is delicious and Mom feeds me food that is good for me.

I go to Doggie Day Care when Mom has to work. I have met so many friends there to play with.

They have a web cam in the play area so Mom can check on me during the day. She loves me so much!

Mom takes me to Dog Parks where I get to meet more new friends to play with. I like it when the wind blows my ears back. One day I even met a dog from Sumter County Humane Society where I was adopted from.

Mom and I go to Venetian Gardens near our home to watch the ducks and birds. Mom takes me on so many adventures.

I got to go on my first golf cart ride through our community. I met a friend at the ballfield. She is very cute. Then we visited grandma and her cat before going home. I like grandma; not so sure about her cat.

Lunch with mom and my friend is so much fun. We discovered a new pet friendly patio and it's my new favorite.

I definitely have gone from Rags to riches. I love to shop for new clothes and toys. Mom bought me a new car seat, a carrier so I can go everywhere with her, a life vest to wear on a boat, my own car (so much fun) and my own chair.
