Overview

King Ragnar Lothbrok of Denmark has been captured by Aella, King of Northumbria. Before his execution, the Abbot of York records Ragnar's life history, including the story of his family, their Gods, and their way of life. After his execution, Queen Aslaug sends his sons to Britain seeking revenge. They pillage everywhere, killing two English Kings in the process. Only the Kingdom of Wessex on the southern coast stands in their way of complete conquest. Under a new leader, King Alfred, their men try to hold the line against the battle-hardened veterans of the Norse. This book was chalk full of historical accuracy brought to life. I was impressed with the wealth of knowledge and research clearly put into this book. The complexity of the political climate was reminiscent of Game of Thrones.
