Overview

Rafa the Refugee is a real-world tale of one young girl’s journey to the United States, her adoption of a new culture, and her journey to preserve her heritage as she finds her way and settles into the USA. Rafa tells the story about how she learned the value of retaining her first language and culture while learning English. As a new refugee, it is important to learn English but never lose your oral language and literacy in the first language. You need both languages and cultures to grow and succeed. Your culture is valued and your language is a gift, and it will go a long way. Never lose your language and you will never lose who you are. This story will inspire those who have immigrated to America or those who come from immigrant families. It provides the lessons of those who courageously developed—and thrived—in new regions without forsaking their origins.

CHAPTER 1

My name is Rafa, and I am a refugee. I was born and raised in Iraq. My country is beautiful with deserts and mountains.

One day a war started in Iraq. People were afraid. On the way home from school I saw something that scared me. I saw many people die in the streets. My country was at war.

When I arrived home, my mother and father told me that it was no longer safe to stay in Iraq and that we were leaving to keep my family safe. We were going to be refugees, seeking a new and safe home. In our new country we would no longer have to worry about if we were going to be killed for who we were or the religion we believed in.

We moved to a refugee camp in Turkey. The refugee camp was a place where people went to be safe from harm. It was a safe place of gathering while my family and I waited for our new home assignment. We were waiting for a permanent home and country.

I found out that we were going to move to the United States of America to make our new home. I was excited and afraid. All that I had ever known was Iraq—my language and my culture.

What would it be like in the United States of America? Would people like and accept us? Would it be hard to learn a new language? Would I still be allowed to speak Arabic?

I learned that English was the language used in the schools, and I was excited to learn this new language.

Once we arrived, I was scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. We were taken to our new home. Right in front of our new home was a shiny red bicycle.
