Description: Well-labeled images provide complete, yet uncluttered, information in this atlas of avian radiology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide examples of normal radiographic images, contrast studies, and alternative imaging studies of commonly seen avian species. Although other resources for normal avian imaging are available, this atlas provides a handy, all-in-one reference. The image quality is consistently good throughout, and the included CD of images is a bonus.
Audience: Veterinarians are the intended audience, and radiologists who only see the occasional avian patient, but are expected to be an "expert" on all species would also find it useful.
Features: Multiple species, including raptors, are covered. Plain film radiographs with multiple views and gastrointestinal contrast studies are included for each species. Computed tomography images are presented for several species. The images are well labeled without being cluttered. All the images in the book are also available in digital format on the CD. The authors point out that print reproduction of radiographs with their subtle contrast changes can be difficult. Each set of images is well labeled as to type of bird, type of study (type and amount of contrast used), radiographic projection, animal weight, gender, reproductive status, and age. Occasionally, the body condition of the bird is commented on. The only shortcoming of the book is some duplication of similar images. Four different types of cockatoos are covered.
Assessment: There are few (if any) complete avian imaging atlases. This high quality book would be an asset for both general practitioners and specialists (imaging and/or exotics).
