Overview

The radiological abnormalities associated with suspected child abuse can be extremely subtle. If missed, a baby or child may be returned to an environment where episodes of abuse may escalate. Purpose: The authors' intent is to provide a reference for all healthcare providers involved in the care of children where abuse is suspected and radiological films are used as supporting evidence. The book is certainly a much-needed and potentially useful resource for all involved in the care of children. It meets the goal of providing a useful source of descriptions and examples of typical radiological findings in child abuse.
Audience: Physicians at all levels of training who care for children are the intended audience. The book is a solid resource for practitioners who are interpreting films in cases of suspected child abuse and it is a good educational tool for those new to the field, such as students and young residents.
Features: The book begins with a concise description of both classic findings of child abuse seen on X-ray films and the data that supports these conclusions. The authors provide information to allow readers to classify and, in many cases, date lesions of suspected abuse. The chapters that follow are divided by classic lesions according to the area of the body, such as head, chest, extremities, etc. Each chapter has a clear description of the lesion and possible causes along with representative films. One of the more important parts of the book is a section with cases for evaluation by readers with follow-up explanations and radiologic examples. My only concern is that there are occasional references to specific films by numbers that are not used on the films. This is a minor problem as the films appear in order of the descriptions, making this a manageable issue.
Assessment: I found this book interesting and useful in better understanding and distinguishing pathological lesions from normal findings. It is concise and easy to read and I will recommend to my house staff and students. It will have a place on my office bookshelf.
