Description: This book provides a wide-ranging review of treatment effects of radiation therapy. An ebook download is included with the print version, but I was unable to access it. Instructions inside the book are to use a coin to scratch off the covering to obtain the code to use for the online material. Unfortunately, I found that the code was not readable and therefore I could not review the online materials.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise summary of the presentation and management of both acute and late radiation related toxicities. The ability of practitioners to recognize and expertly address these issues is of primary importance in clinical practice.
Audience: The audience includes radiation oncology residents, fellows, and practicing physicians. Radiation oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and radiation therapists may also find this book of value. The editor is a credible authority as are many of the contributors, with several who are residents or fellows. However, they are consistently paired with senior authorities on chapters.
Features: The book addresses treatment effects of radiation from a broad perspective. Chapters are for the most part organized by body organ or site, with additional chapters addressing radiation-induced malignancies, cancer survivorship, and maximizing the health and wellness of cancer survivors through healthy lifestyle behaviors.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the literature addressing critical issues related to optimal care of radiation oncology patients. While the book sometimes uses a bulleted format, it takes a bit of effort to extract specific information in the narrative text. However, the book overall is successful in achieving its objective. A disappointment was the defective scratch off that prevented access to the online material. The publisher is strongly encouraged to address this issue.
