CHAPTER 1

Some days on the playground in Letter Land, Q was lonely and sad. One day, he was about to cry and his lips were trembling so much you might say they were quivering. Sure, he had lots of letters to play with, but he was hoping for a real and true friend. He longed for someone who would stick by him through thick and thin.

Yesterday, Q spent time with O. O was somewhat odd, but they got along very well together. They noticed that when they were both capitalized they almost looked like twins. They got a kick out of people missing Q's little stick and thinking he was O. Sometimes, they stood side by side to make googly eyes. Sometimes they hopped up big hills and rolled down them one after the other. Of course it got a little bumpy for Q at times, but he didn't care. O was a friend and O liked that game a lot!

Q also enjoyed P. After all, they were neighbors. But sometimes P was a little proud, and she didn't want to play with Q. Sometimes P was pouting, and so she wouldn'tplay with Q. Sometimes P was perfectly fine, but she still didn't want to spend much time with Q. This made Q feel sad. Sometimes it upset his stomach, and he started to feel a little queasy.

Q thought about what he should do. Maybe he should just go up to a new letter and try to make a friend.

He went up to B, but B was busy with a bat and a ball. He hit the ball. It sailed past a barn! It sailed past a group of trees and made their leaves quake!

"At least he was not boastful," Q thought to himself.

"Come back another time, Q," called B as he swung his bat again beautifully. Q said, "Okay," and left quietly.

Q decided to try talking to M. He had heard that M was merry and loved to have a good time. M was making a mouth-watering milkshake. He poured the milk into the mixer. It made marvelous music while it mixed the milk and cream. But there was only a small quantity.

"I'm sorry, Q," M said. "I only have enough for me."

Q replied quickly, "I understand, M," and then he went home.
