The main character, Atakain, starts out a wanderer, with no memory of his past, and he is trying to find out about himself. He drifts from place to place, working for his keep, faced with prejudice for being an outsider by many people that he deals with, and he is just trying to find his way, figure out who he is, and what is going on.
He meets up with the Sirrelian Marro, who, like others, seems reluctant to have dealings with him, viewing him suspiciously. This time, however, it seems to be something more personal. Atakain stows away on his ship, seeking transportation away from where he is. They get captured by the enemy of Marro’s people, a race known as the Argarians. In a case of mistaken assumptions, Atakain is viewed by them as a spy helping Marro, but they do not know who he is. Marro and Atakain escape before they are interrogated or worse by the Argarians.
They flee across the territory line to Marro’s home ship.
Thus begins Atakain's search for his past, taking him on a multiworld odyssey, meeting many different characters, and getting inadvertantly involved in a rebellion on an alien world, which he can't find a way out of.
