Description: This book covers fundamental concepts in the anesthetic and analgesic management of small companion animals and pocket pets. There is also an electronic version of the book available.
Purpose: The aim to provide a simple, readable, and practical reference on general anesthetic principles and pain management, from preanesthetic evaluation to recovery, is met. While there are similar books in veterinary anesthesia, this is an up-to-date resource and the clear, organized format makes it accessible to readers.
Audience: The intended audience includes nonspecialist veterinarians, students, and veterinary technicians seeking a firm foundation in basic anesthetic knowledge. Information is delivered in a clear and concise manner and does not capture the complexity or controversy of certain practices, but this is appropriate for the intended audience and provides a framework of knowledge that can be built upon. The contributing authors are experienced and recognized in the field.
Features: The approach is methodical and clinically practical, beginning with preanesthetic evaluation and moving on to discussions of preparation of the patient, equipment, pharmacological considerations for premedication, analgesia, and maintenance of anesthesia, considerations for specific procedures and conditions, management of complications, and pain management. The material is comprehensive and provides a good intermediate reference resource - it is not as complex as the nuanced explanations and heavily referenced material geared toward veterinary anesthesiologists, and it is more comprehensive than the oversimplified and basic material covered by other introductory books. The concise chapters are well organized and provide a quick and accessible reference, but are also written in an engaging way (question-and-answer format) to make it enjoyable to read.
Assessment: This is a fine contribution to the field and it offers a valuable current resource for those with an intermediate knowledge base. Although a first edition, this book bears a significant resemblance to the 2002 book, Veterinary Anesthesia and Pain Management Secrets, Greene (Hanley & Belfus), which also employs a question-and-answer style covering similar topics. In order to keep the material simple and straightforward for the intended readership, guidelines are generally presented in a straightforward way. However, this is chapter-specific with some chapters providing a more critical and comprehensive review of the current literature than others. While the online copy of the book does not differ in content from the print version, the option of online or print offers additional options for readers.
