Overview

Humans are conceptual beings who naturally create a belief about things. A belief is a quantum. A quantum is a philosophy, a reality that we believe to be true.

Your brain is an organ that needs to be trained. It doesn't automatically understand its own nature. It creates a unique reality where perception, size, time, space, past, present, and future are changing from moment to moment. This is done so automatically the brain doesn't realize what it is doing. It might even think that it is experiencing a reality, which is the same for everyone else.

The symbol yin-yang is used to represent the Tao--the blending of opposites, balance, harmony, and unity. I have added this sign >, which means greater than, so throughout this book, you will see the Tao as > yin-yang. The reason for this is because moral consciousness is not dualistic. It is absolute, and the primary focus of this book is about moral consciousness.

If you wish to awaken and be reborn anew day by day in such a way that you are always adding to your character, presence, and wisdom and if you wish to live as a master (one who lives in harmony with his true nature), then this is the book for you.

Living masterfully is a rewarding journey that liberates you so you can find life, freedom, and the godliness of nature.

CHAPTER 1

The Ego and Society

Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living."

The Greek philosophers taught that man is a rational animal and was at his best when he understood and used the power of reason.

Sigmund Freud said, "Civilized society, which demands good conduct and does not trouble itself about the instinctual basis of this conduct has thus won over to obedience a great many people who are not in this following their own nature."

Eric Fromm said, "Man's evolution is based on the fact that he has lost his original home, nature – and that he can never return to it, can never become an animal again. There is only one way he can take: to emerge fully from his natural home, to find a new home – one which he creates, by making the world a human one and by becoming human himself."

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "The pest of society is egotism that man runs around the ring formed by his own talent, falls into admiration of it, and loses relationship to the world."

Albert Einstein said, "The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe."

Surviving in the external world must be successfully dealt with, so it becomes a major concern. So the ego skillfully took over and dominated all that it could. It claimed the sea, air, and land, along with all living things. It artistically took the basic elements and with the imagination engaged with confidence to create a technology so that materialistic things that are desirable could commonly be available. With military might and political systems it dominated, so that the forces of evil would not subdue nor restrain nor confront the way of life it had achieved.

Outwardly the efforts of the ego were rewarded because it miraculously reached the moon and explored the solar system; it accomplished sophisticated physical tasks of all kinds with excellence.

With technology, the ego dominated and controlled man's mind so he began to believe that knowledge and power was the key to success and happiness. So at man's technological zenith, inward exploration was unimportant. Living in harmony with one's human nature, seeking the truth in order to be wise was not a matter of major concern. But wisdom is needed because it generates harmony as well as morality, which is essential to effectively regulate human interactions.

The nature of modern society is to grow and become more complex, but as it does it loses a common ideology. It gradually absorbs a variety of belief systems, customs and religions. What is good or bad, ethical or decent becomes vague, and left to the whims of each individual.

Because of this it is even more essential to understand life, and know how to live wisely. When people are unstudied about their human nature, major philosophical mistakes go unnoticed and often become the norm, which results in harmful interactions and unnecessary conflict.

If everyone was going to be a pilot and fly every day, it would be wise to teach navigation, and the basic rules of flying. Children could learn at home and from friends, but without formal instruction there would be more accidents, and as the population increased the dangers of flying would increase.

As with flying, learning about one's human nature, about relationships and life should not be left to chance. Understanding life is the great knowledge that determines our fate, and this knowledge should be well known so that life can be encountered with confidence and reason.

But children and adults have to figure out life on their own and it doesn't come naturally, nor is it easy. Effectively handling stressful situations, coping with change, rejection, and dealing with fear, anxiety, and depression takes professional training. Good character, a positive frame of mind, maturity and self-worth are acquired with great effort and a constant focus on proper thinking habits.

Without personal growth knowledge or guidance, children have trouble with life and get themselves into difficult situations. Then they are seen as being a problem. But children are not a problem, the problem is with a society that avoids teaching youth about their human nature – how to live successfully. Children are the greatest asset that society has.

Parents want to do the best for their children, and give them every opportunity to succeed, but they have a difficult time because parenting, leadership and child development training were not a part of their school curriculum. Parents learn relationship skills as they raise their children. The problem with this way of learning about life is that some people don't learn from their mistakes. Often they become more negative. When this happens, harmful relationships persist while the potential for bonding and learning about (unity) leadership and love is not experienced, and may seem an impossibility.

The success of a relationship is based upon good relationship skills that build trust, respect, harmony and unity.

With best intentions and the will to sacrifice for another, people enter into marriage. But marriages commonly have difficulties because good relationship skills are not understood. Love and good intentions are not enough to guarantee a stable, happy marriage; it takes two people wisely interacting together so that each one enhances the uniqueness of the other.

Political and industrial leaders, who eagerly want to succeed and do their best, cause unnecessary problems for themselves because they make major philosophical mistakes without realizing it. They are knowledgeable about management systems, rules and regulations. They are experts at selling products, budgeting and doing market analysis, but lack (people skills) leadership ability.

Effective leadership is an artful humanitarian way of building esprit de corps, teamwork and a harmonious, positive psychological environment.

Politicians are voted into office whose major concern and primary focus is on external goals. Being wise and compassionate is not a requirement to be politically successful. So power without character and knowledge without wisdom are common throughout modern society.

Therefore modern society is based upon knowledge, management, and personality, rather than wisdom, leadership and character.

Knowledge, management and personality are external, wisdom, leadership and character are internal. It is the internal qualities that determine the humanitarian aspect of society. How sustaining can an organization, love relationship or a society be without trust, integrity, respect and morality?

Because of a materialist external management approach, leaders have been chosen who measure progress in terms of worldly gain, but who are not humanitarians. Therefore the welfare of the planet or the future of mankind was not considered in their decision-making process.

Leaders of this nature have ordered food to be thrown away in the ocean while children starve to death. For economic advantages they have allowed the planet to be trashed. Nuclear waste is increasing and there is no place to store it. Trillions of dollars have been spent on weaponry, and almost nothing on personal-growth programs. Without regard for youth they produce movies and music that promote violence, drug abuse, egotism and negativism.

Selling drugs and rebellion with music, and then idolizing those artists is extremely detrimental to our youth. It distorts their perception of reality and creates lifestyles that are detrimental to society. Freedom of artistic expression is important, but first teach them to be wise, then allow them to be entertained however they wish.

Materialistic (external) progress without inner progress eventually turns into a dysfunctional society. A society without character and wisdom must yield to the criminal element, to drug abuse, to out-of-control gangs.

Technology is about things, not people. It isn't about understanding life, it's about improving the physical quality of life. So technology doesn't make a society civilized, living wisely makes a society civilized. It's the quality of the people that determines the quality of life.

For a while a society may have the luxury of living unmindfully and uncontrollably, but there always comes a time when maturity and wisdom must be the major focus if the society is going to survive. The progress of civilization ceases unless our virtuous nature comes to the forefront and permeates our everyday lives. Only when this happens can we be protected from the evils we manifest for ourselves.

We need organized society and wise leaders but it is their duty to serve humanity so that the greatness of everyone is developed. Each individual has a uniqueness, different from all that is, has ever been, or will ever be.

Society is a living system that is human, therefore it cannot sustain itself healthfully without being true to its virtuous nature. Only with good character can there be wholesomeness. A society is like an individual – it cannot go against its human nature and have insight, clarity of vision, or the spirit to sacrifice for the good. It can only live wisely when it lives harmoniously with its true nature.

The great world outside reviews what we have and haven't done because world conditions are a result of how we think and act. The hour has now passed for debate on how valuable and necessary it is to live wisely. The decisive battle of the world is now at hand, and is being fought on the moral battlefield. The sword is truth. The troops are disciples of wisdom. The leaders and officers are philosopher/sages.

The purpose of life is to awaken to our higher consciousness, then we will conquer ourselves along with crime, drug abuse, and the urge to destroy planet earth.

CHAPTER 2

Natural Law Is Ethics In Action

It is not that ethics, morality, or wisdom are old-fashioned, nonexistent or need to be systemized to be valid. It is that people have not learned how to live in harmony with their human nature.

It is not that moral law is absent and needs to be approved by a committee, or accepted by society. It's that all individuals need to learn how to see it function naturally all the time with each interaction. To see with insight so they can become aware of how ethics apply to each event and how it determines one's quality of being – quality of life.

Your life is about relationships, and the most important relationship that you have is the one that you are having with yourself. Once the dynamics of your personal relationship are understood, you will see how eternal and timeless moral consciousness is and how unnecessary it is for humanity to suffer in so many ways.

With this moral vision, you will have insight. Then you can see with awareness and know how to take action so that you continually elevate your level of consciousness. By doing this you can live harmoniously with your human nature. It becomes easier to see and distinguish the bad from the good in every situation. You do not need a system, advice or a vote to determine what is right or wrong. Because you understand human nature, life is more interesting because you are learning from all of your experiences. As your wisdom grows, you have more freedom to be yourself, to express your authenticity uniquely, with openness and joy. You are able to enjoy fully all cultures and customs, and your way of being will be beneficial for everyone. Those who seek truth and wisdom will know you for who you really are.

Your greatest advantage is that you will not be lulled into complacency ever again, you will not be overcome, or give yourself up to blindly follow a fad, custom or belief. You will remain awake, able immediately to correct ineffective thinking and take the right action, which adds to your confidence and self-esteem.

Instead of running after life or lagging behind it, you will be in the moment, balanced, whole, alive, mindfully there.

To be mindful, to see with clarity an effort has to be made. No one is born with wisdom, self worth, integrity, or a positive attitude. Babies are self centered, dependent, immature, and unaware of any philosophy of life. As they grow older and become adults they may remain immature and unaware. Growing up doesn't guarantee that an individual is mature or wise. In fact an adult may be brilliant, intelligent, well-born, highly educated, rich and powerful, but lack character, inner strength and insight, because he or she is not consciously free.

Documents, money, fame, possessions, titles, cannot consciously awaken someone if he is a slave to poor thinking habits. Those who are free are not getting their freedom from a title, badge, tradition, a political system or from economic superiority because their freedom isn't borrowed from someone or something else. If you are getting your power and strength from an object, organization or position, what happens to you if it is taken away? You are no longer powerful or strong, but if you have strong character and a powerful personal constitution you remain powerful and free regardless of what happens.

No one is given freedom of consciousness with a constitution or by government rules. Personal freedom must be earned. Those who are mature and wise have more freedom than those who are immature and unaware.

A mighty nation with military power and a good constitution cannot ignore the principles of morality and not be offended by itself. The highest that is stated must be integrated into the hearts and minds of its citizens.

For example, the Preamble of the United States Constitution says: "We the People of the United States in order to form a more perfect Union establish justice ..." A society can only have justice when it is worthy of it. It is worthy when it teaches its children about life, about their human nature, how to be wise. The Preamble also says, "insure domestic tranquillity." Domestic tranquillity is a by-product of good character. The citizens determine the quality of life. The Preamble also says, "provide for the common defense." Without love for one's self, the community and country, there is no common defense. The Preamble goes on, "promote the general welfare and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity." Liberty and posterity are secured not only by hope or faith in a constitution, but by a society that constantly strengthens itself with wise parents, leaders and humanitarians.

A constitution is external. Teaching people about life is internal. Both are essential.

It appears that crime, drug abuse and gangs are the underlying cause of society's problems, but these social evils are a result of what happens when untrained people with unethical thinking habits are commonly around. Thinking habits come from inside not from outside. The key to our better future comes from positive inner change, not from external change.

Even when the military is used to put an end to illegal drug traffic it doesn't stop drug abuse, because capturing drug dealers and the destruction of crops is external. Where there is a need, a supply will always be available. Need is the problem, not the supply, and need comes from inside not from outside.

Society continues to build more jails, but jails are external so they do not put a dent in crime. Strict laws are passed but laws are external – they do not change the level of consciousness.

The quality of life depends upon the quality of how people are. And justice is determined by how people act. Those who are ethical become insightful and aware; those who are guilty lose awareness and insight. Those who are wise move to a higher level of consciousness and find freedom, while the unjust move to a lower level of consciousness and lose their freedom.

When someone wins by being unethical, that individual may feel powerful, confident and courageous. Then as his self-supremacy and personal freedom strengthens, he enjoys an arrogance that discounts humility, cooperation and compassion. Then morality and ethical behavior gradually lose validity. The individual has made a serious mistake because he is living in a false reality. He thinks he is free to do what he wants as long as he can get away with it. But this is not the way of reality, and the false reality that individual has created will cause him unending discontent, conflict and confusion.

Unethical behavior is self-defeating because the nature of reality (moral consciousness) does not support that which is unreal – unethical. During my eighteen years of tournament competition and in dealing with thousands of students, I found that those who were negative constantly defeated themselves mentally and physically. They were tense; they overreacted, moved too mechanically, were easily angered and depressed. In competition they talked in ways to demoralize me, which took away their focus of attention and made it easier for me to throw them. Those who were positive and relaxed were physically, mentally and spiritually superior. They were graceful, aware, spontaneous, one with the moment, focused and centered.

Ethical behavior is its own reward in countless ways.
