CHAPTER 1
"My life is boring!" thought Puppy as he waited for Bob to get up and feed him the can of dog food he shared with his best friend, Lucy. That can of dog food was the highlight of Puppy's day.
"I wish he would hurry up! If only I could jump up on his bed, I could wake him up!"
"Just calm down," said Lucy. "He always wakes up eventually!"
When Bob finally got up to feed the dogs, Puppy could not sit still. He yelped and whined and rebounded off Bob's legs as he opened the can.
So life went on, until one morning Puppy was watching TV with Lucy. It was a news interview with Barracuda, a dog on a Navy Seal team. Puppy was transfixed. When the interview was over, Puppy was inspired.
"That's it! I know what I want to be now!" said Puppy. "A Navy Seal dog!"
"You're too short," said Lucy matter-of-factly.
"They might need a short dog to get under things," said Puppy. "Will you help me, Lucy?"
Lucy sat down and scratched her ear. "What do Navy Seal dogs have to do?"
"Barracuda said they have to run fast, jump high, stay calm, and be good smellers."
"Well, that's you in a nutshell," said Lucy flatly. "I guess we should start with the running. Stand over by the storage shed and wait for Roy to come out. Then try to chase him down. Is that cool with you, Roy?" Lucy called out.
"Sure, anything to help," answered Roy, the rabbit who lived in a hole near the storage shed.
Puppy stood by the shed and chased Roy when he came out. Roy was too fast, but after a month, Puppy was right on his heels.
"I think you're ready for the jumping," said Lucy when Puppy finally tackled Roy.
Lucy set up an obstacle course in the backyard. "Here's what you do: jump up on the little wall, run down the wall, jump off, jump over the hose, jump over the beach chair, jump up on the big chair, jump down, and end up by jumping into the wheel barrow. Ready, go!"
Puppy looked ahead at the daunting course. It would be a challenge, but he was up for it. At first, it was too hard, but after a month, Puppy was finishing the course almost as quickly as Roy, who had decided to become his training partner.
